Yep you read right! I'm going to let the Weavers tell this story. "We heard through the grapevine that there was an older Yamaha in a dumpster behind a machine shop just west of town. We went over at lunch time the last week of June last year, and sure enough there was an 81 special underneath a press. It turns out the bike was wrecked around 1989, and was laying on it's side in a shed up until we heard about it being in the dumpster. It had been laying in water for a good while, because there was even a good bit of intrusion in the engine. We ended up finding a used swing arm, wheel, and back tire so we could at least get it on the ground. We changed the oil, went through the carbs, and after some electrical gremlins were handled, I was able to take it for a ride in the early spring of this year. We had to make sure that it would go through the gears and was straight. Once that was confirmed, it got taken down piece by piece until there weren't any more pieces to restore. The engine had to be bored because of the water, but we got away with only going .010 over. The frame and swingarm was powder coated silver, with a clear powdercoat top coat for extra protection. We lucked out finding a right side caliper, and was able to run a dual rotor setup. We ran a 19" front wheel laced with 64 - 8 gauge stainless spokes. and the rear is 16" laced with 48 - 8 gauge stainless spokes. We were on the fence for a long time about color. We were between a metallic pearl yellow, and the burgundy metallic they run on the new c6 Corvettes. We liked the idea of the gold on the burgundy like I have on my 76 XS650, so we went with that and are real pleased the way it came out. The paint really pops in the sun. [Edit-you guys made the right color choice-it looks outstanding. The Weavers used my fender, tank and 1/2 mile system.]
